It uses tried and true mechanics, and sometimes, y'know, that's A-OK. The whole game gives off an 'if it aint broke dont fix it' vibe, and it really shows in the battle system. It just uses methods that have already been practiced in previous games and sorta like- improves on it.

And things that are based off sphere grids. Like it better than freakin sphere grids at least. it takes ages.Īlso I llike the simple-yet-intuitive skill system. And it's not even an animation thing it's just. I like Chrono Cross, but gosh, those battles. But I like having a chance to take a swig 'o my drink while the game does its thing. They really cleaned it up in VIII, and kept to VIII's format in IX.Īs for the speed, it never bothered me. I think my chief issue with VII's battle system was that the command window got in the way of the character info, like, HP and ♥♥♥♥? And I'd have to hold square down in order to look at the bloody stats and make sure the characters weren't dying. The only FF I can even think of that leaves less reason to explore old areas is 13. The characters fleshed out horribly for the most part, some of them had too much edge and not enough personality, the others were just walking cliches. The battle system was absolutely lame, they completely tossed the idea of actually building a party out the window, since you could just sub anyone in anyway. 10 had the most boring linear and predictable plot in the series. Worse then X? I have to wonder if you're high at this point. Not to mention, you can really notice the difference between having your abilities equipped, and not. There was a real motivation to actually collect as much equipment as possible. On top of everything I think the ability system in FF9 was amazing. Not to mention the way game enforced classes, added a whole element to building your team from the last games.

The combat does sometimes feel slow paced with 3 people in the party, but that's not very common in this game. Zidane gets absolutely OP with some of his dyne abilities, most of the others do as well, however it varies between characters. Your complaint about trance seems ridiculous to me. Not to mention the way enemies scaled to your level, completely defeats the purpose of training boss characters since your enemies stayed just as strong comparatively. Between that and the GF system there was way too much micro managing. That chop your own nuts off and stick em in a blender stock system for magic was just lame. In my opinion 8 is the only game in the series that's as all around terrible as 13.
